Smelly Breath
If your cat has bad breath, there are several possibly reasons:
Teething:
At around 6 months of age, cats will lose there baby teeth and grow their permanent ones. If the gums are puffy and red and you can see the white points of teeth breaking through the gums, the cat is just teething and the odour will subside as the new teeth come in.
Gingivitis:
If the gums appear red and swollen and he/she is definitely not teething, your cat could have a gum infection. Make an appointment with your vet.
Diet:
Medication and certain canned foods can make your cat's breath smell. If possible change your cat's diet to a more easily digestible food but be sure to do this gradually.
Abscessed tooth:
Bad smelling breath might be the only symptom of this problem but sometimes it will be accompanied with heavy drooling. The cat should be taken to the vet to have the abscess drained or possibly have the affected tooth removed. Failure to do this could lead the infection to spread to the sinuses.
It is important to take your cat to the vet for regular check-ups.
