Name: Caracal (Caracal Caracal)– Medium Cats

Size: 14-19 kg (31-42 lb)

Distribution: The Caracal prefers to live in dry savanna and woodlands. It will not be found in tropical rainforests. The Caracal ranges over most of Africa, parts of the Middle East and South West Asia. In Central and West Africa, farmers have been reported for killing the Caracal for their skins and meat. However the Caracal is not considered to be under threat in these states.

Description: The Caracal cat generally has a slender body, long legs, short tail and reddish brown coat. Its unusual ears have long, pointy black tufts at the top of them. The Caracal will usually hunt at twilight or day and preys on small deer, hares and other animals. This cat is also known for its ability to catch birds, whereby, it leaps in the air and hits them with its paws. Some Caracal may be trained to catch game for humans.

Lifespan: 19 years
