Domestic Breed

wireshorthair

Name: American Wirehair (Shorthair breed)

Origin / History: The American Wirehair is a rare breed of cat, which is almost unknown outside America. It began as a spontaneous mutation in a litter of farm cats, in upstate New York, in 1966. Successive crossings with American Shorthairs developed the breed. The American Wirehair was first accepted by the CFA in 1967 and was given championship status in 1978.

Characteristics: The American Wirehair is medium to large in size. Its head is rounded with high cheekbones and a well developed chin. It has large round eyes that are widely spaced. Its ears are medium-sized with rounded tips. The legs and tail are both of medium length. Often the American Wirehair will have curly whiskers. The most distinctive feature of the Wirehair is its tightly crimped coat. The ideal coat is dense and coarse.

Personality: This breed is known for its gentle, affectionate and friendly ways. Their relaxed and even tempered nature also makes them a popular choice for families with small children. Although this cat is known to be gentle and easy-going it has also been described, by owners, as an active breed that takes a keen interest in its surroundings and who likes to play and join in family games.
